Home / Services / Renters Insurance
Your furniture, clothes, laptop and everyday essentials help make a rental feel like home. Your landlord’s insurance generally protects the building and the landlord’s property—not your belongings.
Kati Cheek Insurance helps renters in Metairie and across Louisiana understand personal property, liability and additional living expense coverage. Start with a brief request, and our team will help coordinate the next step.
Free, no-obligation request. Coverage is subject to eligibility and policy terms.

Personal belongings · Liability · Additional living expenses
A renters policy typically combines protection for qualifying belongings with personal liability coverage. Other protections may be included or available, depending on the policy.
Personal property coverage may help repair or replace furniture, clothing, electronics and other belongings after covered events such as fire or theft. Your deductible, limits and valuation method affect the amount payable.
Liability coverage may help with covered claims when you are legally responsible for another person’s injury or property damage. Coverage can include defense costs, subject to policy terms.
If a covered loss makes your rental uninhabitable, loss-of-use coverage may help with qualifying increases in living costs, such as temporary lodging or meals. Time limits and dollar limits apply.
Some policies include limited coverage for qualifying medical expenses when a guest is accidentally injured, regardless of fault. This is different from your own health insurance.
The property owner’s insurance generally addresses the building and the owner’s property. Renters insurance is designed around your belongings and qualifying personal liability exposures.
For example, a covered apartment fire could damage both the building and your furniture. Your landlord’s building policy generally does not pay to replace your sofa, clothes or laptop. Your renters policy may respond to covered damage to those items.
Check your lease for any insurance requirements and ask an insurance professional about limits and proof of coverage.
A standard renters policy generally does not cover flooding. Certain sudden plumbing-related water damage may be covered, while sewer or drain backup may require an endorsement. The source of the water and the policy wording matter.
Separate flood contents insurance may be available to renters. Do not assume a landlord’s flood policy covers your belongings, or that living outside a high-risk flood zone removes the risk.
Ask our team how renters and flood coverage differ, especially for a ground-floor rental or a property with drainage concerns.
Start with a room-by-room inventory of your belongings. Include furniture, electronics, clothing, cookware and other everyday items—the total replacement cost can be more than you expect.
Replacement cost coverage generally considers the cost of replacing an item with a comparable new one, subject to policy conditions. Actual cash value generally accounts for depreciation. Ask how claims payments are calculated.
Your deductible is the amount you are responsible for on an applicable covered claim. Review both the premium and deductible before choosing a policy.
Jewelry, collectibles and certain other items may have special limits, particularly for theft. Ask whether scheduled personal property or another coverage option is appropriate.
A roommate is not automatically insured simply because you share an address. Ask which household members are covered and whether separate policies are needed.
Policies do not protect against every loss. Flooding, earthquakes, ordinary wear and tear, preventable damage and some business-related property or liability exposures may be excluded or limited.
Vehicles require separate auto insurance. A renters policy may cover qualifying belongings stolen from a car, but it does not replace the car itself. Pet-related liability can also be subject to exclusions or restrictions.
Discuss valuables, home-based work, roommates and pets with the licensed insurance professional reviewing your options.
Your premium can depend on the rental location, selected limits, deductible, claims history, policy options and other rating factors permitted by law.
There is no single price that applies to every renter. Ask about available discounts or combining renters and auto insurance, but compare the actual coverage and total premium. Eligibility and savings vary.
